Router

What is meant by Router?

Internet is nothing but an interconnection of huge and small networks so in order to connect these networks we use a device named Router. The router is connected to more than two networks namely one is LAN’s network (local area network) or WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) and the other is ISP’s (internet service providers) Network. The flow of data between the two networks is controlled by this timely device.

What is the function of router?
The main function of the routers is for internet connectivity and for internal use. When we send the data across the networks it is carried in the form of packets. And these packets are transported from source address to destination address by using the Router. This kind of transporting data is called routing. The source and the destination address mentioned here is the ip address (internet protocol address) of the source system and the destination system. The ip's will be in the form of 123.201.17.188.
This ip address is given by the ISP (internet service providers) to the router and router assigns private ip address to the pc to connect the global network.
Router hides the system public ip address given by the ISP (internet service providers) and assigns private ip address to the pc on the network to avoid spy ware intrusions while data transporting from one network to another network. The router itself acts as an internal firewall in the system.
By using these ip addresses of the source system and the destination system the router connects the source network and destination network and transfers the data in the form of packets.
The router is used to connect multiple computers to the internet using the single ISP (internet service providers).
So that we can skip the full payment to ISP (internet service providers) subscription for each and every computer which is connected to the internet. Just we need to pay for the additional computer sharing of the connection.
We can buy the broadband routers with firewall based additional for multiple connections of the computers to the internet.

Router Protocols

There are 2 protocols for routes one is interior router protocol and the other is exterior router protocol. This IRP (interior Router Protocol) is used for routing the information among the routers internally to an autonomous system and similarly ERP (Exterior Router Protocol) is used for routing the information among routers externally in an autonomous system.

Types of routers

There are 2 types of routers:
1) static router
2) dynamic router

Static router: routing tables which are defined manually in a router is called static router. Static router is best in use for small home networks but not for large networks as there is a continuous change in the protocols in large network, as this static router
Is configured manually by system or network administrator.

Dynamic Router:
Routing tables which are defined dynamically in a router is called dynamic router. Dynamic router is best in use for large office networks. As there is an automatic configuring of protocols in dynamic the communication system between routers across the networks works better than static routers.

Manufacturers:
The top companies in manufacturing routers are Cisco, Alcatel, and Juniper.
